About Robert Martwick

Unethical or Incompetent?

Robert Martwick failed to list his additional source of income because it was “too hard to understand”. Martwick, a lawyer, had failed to disclose additional income from his own political consulting firm, First Tuesday Inc, which has notable clients such as Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Assessor and Chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party, Joe Berrios. The law firm Martwick is employed at is a major campaign contributor to Joe Berrios. First Tuesday Inc has drawn in more than $670,000 since 2005 from other Illinois politicians. At the time, Martwick did not have a Chicago business license either.

Improper and Out of Touch

After legislator pay was delayed due to the budget stalemate, Robert Martwick had complained about not getting paid. After calling the delayed payments “extortion and corruption”, Martwick failed to look in the mirror and had made this comment after fellow legislator, Jaime Andrade, had to drive with Uber to make ends meet. However in 2014, Martwick voted for a bill that would have severely restricted ridesharing services such as Uber.

Born into a clout-heavy family, Robert and his father work at a politically connected property tax firm that makes its money by lowering property tax bills for corporate clients. They maintain a very close relationship with Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios. According to a 2010 New York Times investigation, Martwick’s law firm was a top political donor to Berrios and his daughter, former state representative Maria Berrios, contributing more than $164,000 to both campaigns.

Loves to Waste Taxpayer Dollars

Early in 2017, Robert Martwick introduced a bill to translate the government website to Spanish which would have cost $1.5 million. While introducing the bill, fellow legislator Keith Wheeler had quickly translated the bill into Polish. Using the free service Google Translate, both Representative Wheeler and Mark Batinick had shot down any chance of the bill being called for a vote. Martwick then pulled the bill over lack of support.

Voted to Raise Our Income Taxes by 32%

At the end of the budget stalemate, Robert Martwick voted to raise the income tax in Illinois by 32%, or at least $1,200 per family per year. With no reforms tied to the bill, Martwick chose to kick the can down the road.

Politics over Constituents on the 5150 Housing Project

A hot topic with Jefferson Park residents is around the proposed high-rise housing project on 5150 N Northwest Highway. Robert Martwick failed to take a position on the matter and, by extension, stood against the people. Once again, Martwick has failed to listen to his constituents, even after a petition with over 6,000 signatures opposing the project and demanding public opposition from Martwick, Arena and others was presented.
